Biography
As the District Extension Director for University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in South Central Florida, Dr. Vavrina works closely with the Dean and Associate Dean of Extension, and Program Leaders in 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences, Agriculture, Energy and Sea Grant. Major emphasis is given to networking with eleven County Administrations, Boards of County Commissioners, seventy-five faculty and other branches of the University of Florida in a combined leadership/managerial role. Dr. Vavrina works closely with County Extension Directors and faculty to refine and define programmatic needs and delivery methods and is presently spearheading sustainability efforts in the District.
Dr. Vavrina grew up in suburban New Jersey, received a B.S. in Biology from Bethany College in West Virginia, a M.S. from the University of Connecticut in Forestry and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Horticulture. He came to University of Florida in 1989 where he served thirteen years as a Vegetable Extension Specialist with emphasis in transplant production and stand establishment before moving into administration.
