Guidelines for Assessing County Faculty Teaching Skills

Each County Extension Director (CED) is responsible for assuring that teaching skills of new faculty are assessed within the first 6 months of their employment, and that all faculty teaching skills are assessed at least every five years. Assessments should be performed more frequently if the original assessment reveals that some skills need significant improvement. The CED can perform these assessments or delegate this to other senior faculty in the same County or ask CEDs in other counties if their faculty will be available to perform an assessment. The CED should keep records/reports of these assessments on file and use them to provide comments on teaching skills in the "Delivery/Contacts and Statistical Report" section of the annual faculty evaluation form, and in letters of evaluation for promotion applications. If areas of needed improvement are identified, they should be addressed in the annual professional development plan.
