Following years of partnership and involvement at county and regional levels, in 2021 Florida Power & Light (FPL) stepped up to power the statewide Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program with a $100,000 commitment over five years. This investment has ensured the program’s post-COVID recovery and growth. FPL’s support helped the program expand from 47,778 youth participants in 2021 to over 56,000 in 2024, while enhancing resources, awards, and classroom impacts. FPL representatives have actively supported the program by serving as guest speakers, judges, and presenters at award ceremonies, celebrating the accomplishments of youth across Florida.
The program has transformed the lives of countless students, including one who initially planned to accept a failing grade due to her fear of public speaking but went on to win first place in her class and school. Another success story highlights a limited-English-speaking student who overcame his apprehension to deliver a speech that revealed his humor and personality, earning an encore request from his classmates and building newfound friendships. FPL’s support has made these life-changing experiences possible, empowering young Floridians with the skills and confidence to thrive in work, life, and beyond.
